Part of Performing Pleasure at Mart co-curated by Helena Walsh and Francis Fay and Eleanor Lawler of Livestock as part of the Dublin Live Art Festival Summer programme.

Positioned in an urban alley on top of a pile of rubble and a giant British colonial atlas in this durational performance Walsh offered a retort to the derogatory descriptions and symbolic appropriations of the female body within patriarchal discourse. Staunchly occupying the passageway Walsh playfully twisted the associating of the female body with territory, the dichotomies of purity and immorality, alongside sexist slang that describes the vagina as synonymous with fast food and consumption within contemporary capitalist society.

Materials used: Roses, burger buns, pita bread, laundry liquid, take-away bags, green, white and gold glitter, Virgin Mary holy water bottles and Stanford’s Atlas (1887) dedicated to ‘Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, the Colonies and Dependencies, Empress of India’
